Slovenia – Postojna

From Plitvice we drove over the mountains to Slovenia, staying at Rooms Magdić near to Cerknica. We woke up to a breakfast of local honey with home-made jams and cured meats, with a nice view over green hills covered in pine trees.

After breakfast we headed towards Postojna caves,  for our tour that we had pre-booked online (€22.90). Upon arrival we were very impressed with the organisation and efficiency at the Postojna cave, and within minutes of parking we were on a train making our way through the caves. The train stopped deep in the caves and we were greeted by our guide, who took us on a tour of the caves, explaining the different types of stalagmites and stalactites as well as the history of the cave. Photography inside the caves was tricky as they did not allow flash or tripods, but I gave it a go anyway.

After the 1.8km walking tour of the caves we saw some human fish, before once again exiting the cave on the train. It can get quite chilly while riding on the train, so I would recommend that you take a jacket! From Postojna cave the way to Postojna Castle is well signposted, and a nice drive through the countryside. As we were short on time we didn’t go in, choosing to admire the castle from the outside.

My first visit to Slovenia was definitely too short, as the countryside was stunning, the people were friendly and the tourist attractions very well organised!
